Staying inspired and focused as a template designer is a breeze when the templates created by you are selling like Christmas cakes. Creating a web template that will be appreciated and accepted by buyers is a dream of many designers. If you are wondering how to craft such web template then here are some useful tips that can help you in improving your template designing.

1- Make it attractive

You may be the best coder in the world but for selling your template you should make them visually appealing. Concentrate on the typography. Make sure that the font, line-height, letter spacing, alignment and spacing are in perfect order. Check out the color combination. If you are designing a web template for some specific target groups then the complementary colors should be appealing to such groups.

2- Customize contact forms

This is most neglected while designing a web template. Designers probably spend least time in crafting the contact forms. However, these are areas where the customers interact with the site. Smartly designed contact forms can set your template apart from similarly designed templates.

3- Establishing visual hierarchy

While designing a web template you should ensure that a visitor is able to find relevant content on a site quickly and easily. A strong visual hierarchy helps in guiding the visitors through the content in order of importance or relevance. Without visual hierarchy, a web template feels awkward and uncomfortable to use. Buyers verify whether a template has visual hierarchy or not.

4- Make it simple

Simple things are often overlooked while designing a web template. Content sliders and tabs are perfect example. Many designers feel they are too old concept. However, a large number of buyers of web templates in the market feel that it helps them to display more content in less space. jQuery effects can be explored for this purpose.

5- Maintaining a balanced structure

Layout of a web template plays crucial role in establishing visual hierarchy, z-eye flow and balance of a web page. A template should have a clear header, followed by navigation bar below it and a logo on the top left. Area reserved for content should be just below the top navigation. A sidebar containing sitemap or relevant links to different pages may be placed on the right side.

While going through a site your eyes naturally moves across the web page in Z formation. It starts from top left ends in top right and comes back to left for moving to right. While placing your content, advertisement and prominent products you need to keep this pattern in mind.

6- Make it flexible and functional

Beautiful and inspiring web template is not only about a visually pleasing design. You need to concentrate on its functionality too. A template that is not fully functional may be rejected by the users. When a web template is bought or downloaded developers immediately start customizing it.

This means they will start digging at the markups written by you and if you have done a poor job they will come up with poor rating for the web template. Once you get accustomed with CSS you will be able to write codes that are flexible and less bloated. Tricks and tips of CSS allow you to attain the desired layout.

The web template designed by you should be validated before you sell it to your clients. The HTML and CSS files should be validated with W3C validation. This helps in identifying the probable errors generated by the markup. When the validator comes up with lots of warnings and errors it is time to check the XHTML.

7- Provide an overview

Attract your potential customers’ attention by providing an overview of the content styles like forms, tables, text, heading etc. in an overview page of your web template. This helps in creating a positive impression among the prospective buyers about the template designer. Some designers are offering live preview of their web templates. They believe that it is an attractive way to draw potential customers.

Take care on documentation part of the web template. An in-depth documentation helps your customers to know how you have developed the template and how to utilize it to its full potential. Recording short screenshots may be used for demonstrating the ways of utilization.

Designing a web template has become highly competitive and you need to get noticed in the crowd. Use reference of your satisfied clients, join several forums and learn new tricks to stay focused. Knowing your codes and designing a good structure are prime requirements. Make it visually pleasing and fully functional is crucial for collecting rave reviews. Establish a visual hierarchy to help the developers. Focus on quality and don’t forget to validate your codes before you have put it up for sale. Follow the fundamentals and ensure quality.
